Violeta Lozano Chao

Violeta joined Harbour Hotels in 2024 and has recently been promoted to General Manager of Harbour Hotel Richmond. Overseeing all departments and ensuring all employees are aligned with not only the strategic goals of the hotel but also striving to create the best guest experience possible takes skill learned over a long career in Hospitality.

How did you climb the ladder to where you are now?

"My three key pillars to success at work are:

Always surround yourself with great mentors – people who guide you, challenge you, push you forward and inspire you every day. Learning from those with experience can truly shape your journey.

Hard work – It might seem obvious but there is no way around it! Time, understanding pressure, commitment, dedication, and genuine effort are all vital.

Passion for what you do – Believe in what you are building. It is about growth, creating something meaningful, adding value to your job and to yourself."

What do you enjoy most about your role?

"One of the most exciting things about this role is that it demands focus on so many different aspects. It is that feeling of always being alert (not stressed, but attentive), making sure the hotel runs smoothly, the guests are happy, the team is doing well, and the business is performing efficiently. This ongoing awareness keeps me alive, and I truly enjoy it."

What skills have got you to where you are today?

"Self-awareness and discipline. Recognising strengths and weaknesses, facing them head-on, and working to get better. I truly value and respect myself, enjoying my freedom and my ability to make the right decisions for my life. I stay focused, never take anything for granted, and try to avoid the easy way out. I always aim to do my best and ensure that nothing I do compromises the person I want to become."

What is one highlight from your time at Harbour Hotels?

"It's been incredible experience!

From the very beginning, I was welcomed with warmth and hospitality, just like we aim to provide for our guests. Not only has Harbour given me opportunities and believed in me, but it has also made me feel truly supported.

I’m surrounded by phenomenal individuals who inspire me every day. They not only help me in my professional development but also make it an enjoyable journey."

What is the biggest challenge of your role?

"The biggest challenge, ironically, is simply being a woman.

It is sad and hard to admit, but being a woman in a leadership role often comes with certain challenges.

We are often judged for being too emotional, too firm or too decisive – labelled as dramatic or tough. Our actions are always more scrutinised while men often have more space to be assertive without facing the same judgment. This double standard is something we need to acknowledge, and recognise that hard decisions and strong actions are necessary, regardless of the gender.

Woman strive to work fairly, straightforwardly and in the best interest of the business, just like anyone else."

Tell us about someone who inspired you

"My parents. I’ve always admired their dedication and professionalism in their work, along with the strong values they uphold.

They built their businesses on a foundation of ethics and honesty, and created an environment that wasn’t just successful from a business side but also from a human perspective.

The respect and admiration they’ve earned has been truly impressive. In particular, I’ve always looked up to my mum, who managed to balance work, family, life, and leisure, all while remaining a strong and graceful woman."

What are your future career aspirations?

"My focus is the present. It is not about taking many big steps forward but about making progress through small achievements and see where those will take me.

No need giant moves, the continuous improvement and steady progression through day-to-day wins is what it builds the confidence and pride."

Do you have any advice to aspiring women in the industry?

"I am not really a fan of giving advice because, as women, we are all so different. We each have our own options, our own timing and our own priorities to get to wherever we want to go.

Our strength lies in supporting each other and respecting the freedom of deciding who we want to be.

However, if I were to offer anything, it would be to stay true to yourself, trust in your own path, play fair, and make always a decision because even if it is not perfect, at least you are moving forward."

How do you think we can accelerate action this International Women's Day?

"The best way of accelerating the spirit of International Woman’s Day is by supporting one another.

We should learn from the women ahead of us and be proud of their achievements and acknowledge the effort and challenges they have likely overcome. Encourage the women next to you, spot talent, offer them opportunities and help them to grow and shine. But beyond the work environment, let’s also contribute to lifting other women, whether they are family, friends, neighbours, or colleagues. We should never question, undermine or criticise them in any form or shape. Instead, we must respect their different ways of living, learning, progressing, and deciding."
